Futures Market Hours: Complete 2026 Session Guide for Every Contract
Futures markets trade nearly 24 hours a day, five days a week through CME Globex electronic trading. The trading week opens Sunday at 5:00 PM Central Time and closes Friday at 4:00 PM CT, with a daily one-hour maintenance break each weekday afternoon.
I trade futures across multiple prop firm accounts, and understanding session times is one of those things that sounds basic but trips up more traders than you'd expect. I've had accounts flagged β and one blown β because I was holding a position into the daily close at a firm that required flat by 3:59 PM CT. Knowing the exact hours for every product you trade isn't optional. It's survival.
This guide covers every major futures contract, their exact session times, how sessions overlap across time zones, and why this matters specifically for prop firm traders.
What Are the Standard Futures Trading Sessions?
Futures don't follow a single market open and close like stocks. They trade in overlapping sessions across the Globex electronic platform.
The three sessions most traders reference:
Overnight/Globex Session: 5:00 PM to 8:30 AM CT (Sunday through Thursday evenings into the next morning). This is the extended session where Asian and European markets are active. Volume is thinner, spreads can be wider, and price moves sometimes gap at the 5 PM open.
Regular Trading Hours (RTH): 8:30 AM to 3:15 PM CT for equity index futures. This is where the bulk of volume trades. The cash market overlap (9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET / 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM CT) drives the tightest spreads and most liquidity.
Post-Market/Settlement: 3:15 PM to 4:00 PM CT. Limited activity after the equity close. The official daily settlement price is determined during this window.
Daily Maintenance Break: 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM CT (Monday through Thursday). No trading. The exchange resets, and a new trading day begins at 5:00 PM CT.
These times apply to CME Group products traded on Globex. Other exchanges (ICE, Eurex) have different schedules, but for prop firm trading, 95%+ of activity is CME-based.
What Are the Exact Hours for Every Major Futures Contract?
As of March 2026, here are the Globex trading hours for every major futures product. All times are Central Time (CT).
Note: Globex hours are identical for most products (Sunday 5 PM to Friday 4 PM CT). The differences are in Regular Trading Hours (RTH), which vary by product group.
How Do Global Sessions Overlap?
Futures don't exist in a vacuum. Price moves during the overnight session are driven by activity in Asia and Europe. Understanding session overlaps helps you know when volume spikes and when it dries up.
Time Zone Conversion Reference
The London/New York overlap (8:30β10:00 AM CT) is the most volatile and liquid window for equity index futures. This is when I do the majority of my trading on prop firm accounts. Tighter spreads, faster fills, and cleaner price action.
The Asian session tends to be quieter for ES and NQ, but can produce significant moves in gold (GC), crude oil (CL), and currency futures (6E, 6J) when Asian economic data drops.
Which Sessions Have the Best Volume and Liquidity?
Not all hours are created equal.
For equity index futures (ES, NQ, YM, RTY), roughly 70% of daily volume occurs during RTH. The first 90 minutes after the 8:30 AM CT open and the final hour before the 3:15 PM close are the highest-volume windows.
I trade almost exclusively during RTH on my prop firm accounts. The spreads are tighter, the order flow is cleaner, and the risk of random overnight gaps eating your drawdown is zero if you're flat by close.
For commodities, the volume distribution is different. Crude oil (CL) sees heavy activity during the 9:00 AM CT EIA inventory report window. Gold (GC) has a European session volume bump between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM CT when London is active.
Treasury bonds (ZB, ZN) spike around economic data releases, particularly at 7:30 AM CT when pre-market data drops, and during FOMC announcements at 1:00 PM CT.
Trading during low-volume hours isn't inherently bad, but you need wider stops, more patience, and an understanding that fills may be slower. On a prop firm account with tight drawdown limits, that extra slippage during the Asia session can be the difference between staying funded and getting flagged.
How Do Futures Market Hours Affect Prop Firm Accounts?
This is where session knowledge becomes money-or-death knowledge for prop firm traders.
Most futures prop firms have rules tied directly to market hours. The most common ones:
Flat-by-close requirements. Firms like Apex Trader Funding and TakeProfitTrader require you to close all positions before the daily maintenance break at 4:00 PM CT. Some firms set an earlier cutoff at 3:10 PM or 3:59 PM CT. Missing this deadline can trigger an automatic liquidation or even an account violation.
I've been burned by this. Once, I was in a winning NQ trade at 3:55 PM CT and figured I'd ride it into close. The firm auto-liquidated at 3:59 PM and flagged the account. I didn't lose the account, but I got a warning. Lesson learned.
No overnight holding. Many prop firms prohibit holding positions through the 4:00β5:00 PM maintenance break. This means you can't swing trade or hold overnight on most funded accounts. Some firms like Lucid Trading allow overnight holding on specific account types, but it's the exception.
News trading restrictions. Some firms restrict trading during high-impact news events. If the NFP report drops at 7:30 AM CT on a Friday, you may need to be flat 2 minutes before and after. This directly ties to knowing the economic calendar and session timing.
End-of-day drawdown calculations. Firms with EOD (end-of-day) trailing drawdowns calculate your drawdown level at market close, not intraday. Knowing when your firm's "close" is matters for risk management. Most use 4:00 PM CT, but confirm with your specific firm.
What Happens on Sundays and Market Holidays?
The futures market opens each week on Sunday at 5:00 PM CT. Before that, there's no trading. The Sunday open often comes with a gap from Friday's close, especially if significant news broke over the weekend.
I avoid trading the Sunday open on prop firm accounts. The gap risk is real, spreads are wide, and volume is thin until the Asian session gets going. If I'm already funded and protecting a drawdown cushion, there's no reason to expose myself to Sunday evening volatility.
For holidays, CME Group publishes an annual holiday schedule. In 2026, the major closures and early closes include:
- New Year's Day (Jan 1): Closed
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan 19): Early close
- Presidents' Day (Feb 16): Early close
- Good Friday (Apr 3): Closed
- Memorial Day (May 25): Early close
- Independence Day (Jul 3): Early close
- Labor Day (Sep 7): Early close
- Thanksgiving (Nov 26): Early close
- Christmas (Dec 25): Closed
On early close days, futures typically halt between 12:00 PM and 1:15 PM CT depending on the product. Always check the CME Group holiday calendar before trading around holidays. I've also written a more detailed breakdown in my CME trading hours guide.
What Is the Best Time to Trade Futures on a Prop Firm Account?
My personal trading window is 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM CT. That's the RTH open through the London/New York overlap close.
Here's why:
Volume is at its peak. ES and NQ see their highest tick volumes in this window. Tighter spreads mean less slippage. More participants mean more predictable order flow.
Major data releases happen early. CPI, PPI, retail sales, jobless claims β most of these drop at 7:30 AM CT. By 8:30 AM, the reaction is already priced in and you can trade the follow-through.
You're mentally fresh. Trading during RTH means you're working during normal waking hours (for North American traders). Overnight sessions mean disrupted sleep, which means worse decisions on risk management.
Your prop firm drawdown isn't exposed overnight. If you're flat by 11:00 AM, you've captured the best opportunity window and aren't sitting in positions during the low-volume afternoon chop.
I know traders who only trade the London session (2:00β5:00 AM CT) on gold and crude. It works for them because that's where the liquidity is for those products. There's no universal best time β it depends on what you trade. But for equity index futures on a prop firm account, the 8:30β11:00 AM window is hard to beat.
How Do Daylight Saving Time Changes Affect Futures Hours?
Twice a year, the U.S. clock shift catches traders off guard. Futures hours don't change β they're always expressed in Central Time. But if you're trading from Europe, Asia, or anywhere that observes different DST rules, the relative timing shifts.
The U.S. springs forward on the second Sunday of March and falls back on the first Sunday of November. The EU adjusts on different dates. For about 3 weeks in March and 1 week in November, the offset between U.S. and European time zones changes by one hour.
If you're in London, the RTH open normally hits at 2:30 PM GMT. During the DST gap, it's 1:30 PM GMT. If you've set alerts or alarms based on clock time, you'll miss entries or exits.
I keep a timezone converter bookmarked and double-check it around the DST transitions. It sounds trivial. It's not. I've seen traders in my Discord miss the entire RTH open because their alarms were wrong by an hour after the spring change.
How Do Pre-Market and After-Hours Sessions Compare to RTH?
Pre-market (5:00 PM to 8:30 AM CT) and after-hours (3:15 PM to 4:00 PM CT) are valid trading windows, but they behave differently than RTH.
Spreads are wider. On ES during RTH, the spread is usually 0.25 points (one tick). During the overnight session, I've seen it widen to 0.50 or 0.75 points, especially between midnight and 3:00 AM CT when both Asia and Europe are in transition.
Liquidity is thinner. A market order that fills instantly during RTH might take a few seconds overnight. Limit orders are safer during extended hours.
Gap risk is real. If you're holding a position through the 4:00β5:00 PM maintenance break (on firms that allow it), the 5:00 PM reopen can gap. I've seen 10+ point gaps on ES at the Sunday open and 3-5 point gaps on weeknight reopens after major news.
For prop firm traders, the overnight session is generally higher risk. Your drawdown cushion is finite, and the reward-to-risk ratio of overnight trading rarely justifies the exposure. Unless you're specifically trading Asian session breakouts on commodities or currencies, RTH is where the edge is.
Frequently Asked Questions
What time does the futures market open on Sunday?
The futures market opens on Sunday at 5:00 PM Central Time on CME Globex. This marks the start of the trading week for all CME Group products including equity index futures (ES, NQ), commodities (GC, CL), and treasury futures (ZB, ZN). The Sunday open often features a gap from Friday's closing price.
What is the daily maintenance break for futures?
The CME Globex daily maintenance break runs from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM Central Time, Monday through Thursday. No trading occurs during this window. The exchange uses this hour for system maintenance and to mark the boundary between one trading day and the next. All positions that prop firms require flat must be closed before 4:00 PM CT.
What are Regular Trading Hours for ES futures?
Regular Trading Hours for E-mini S&P 500 (ES) futures run from 8:30 AM to 3:15 PM Central Time. This window overlaps with the U.S. cash equity market and sees approximately 70% of daily ES volume. The micro E-mini S&P 500 (MES) follows the same RTH schedule.
Can you trade futures 24 hours a day?
Futures trade nearly 24 hours on weekdays through CME Globex, from 5:00 PM CT Sunday through 4:00 PM CT Friday. The only daily interruption is the one-hour maintenance break from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM CT on weekday evenings. Weekends and certain holidays are fully closed.
What are the best hours to trade futures?
The best hours to trade futures depend on the product. For equity index futures (ES, NQ, YM), the window from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM CT offers the highest volume and tightest spreads. For crude oil (CL), the 9:00 AM CT EIA report window is most active. For gold (GC), the London session overlap from 3:00 AM to 5:00 AM CT drives significant volume.
Do prop firms allow overnight futures trading?
Most futures prop firms do not allow overnight trading, requiring all positions to be closed before the 4:00 PM CT daily maintenance break. Some firms like Lucid Trading offer specific account types that permit overnight holding. Always check your firm's specific rules before holding positions through the maintenance break, as violations can result in account termination.
What time zone do futures markets use?
Futures markets on CME Globex use Central Time (CT), which is the timezone of the CME Group headquarters in Chicago. Central Time is UTC-6 during standard time and UTC-5 during daylight saving time. All official CME session times, settlement windows, and maintenance breaks are expressed in Central Time.
How does daylight saving time affect futures trading hours?
Daylight saving time does not change CME Globex trading hours, which are always expressed in Central Time. When the U.S. springs forward in March, the Globex open is still 5:00 PM CT. Traders outside the U.S. need to adjust their local clocks, since the offset between CT and their timezone changes temporarily until their region adjusts as well.
What happens to futures positions during the maintenance break?
Any open futures position at 4:00 PM CT will remain open through the maintenance break and reopen at 5:00 PM CT. The position may face a gap at the reopen. Most prop firms require positions to be closed before the break, and holding through it constitutes a rule violation. Firms that do allow overnight holding still expose traders to gap risk during this window.
Are futures market hours different for commodities versus equity indexes?
Globex electronic trading hours are the same for most products (Sunday 5:00 PM to Friday 4:00 PM CT). The difference is in Regular Trading Hours (RTH). Equity index futures (ES, NQ) have RTH from 8:30 AM to 3:15 PM CT, while crude oil (CL) runs 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM CT, gold (GC) runs 7:20 AM to 12:30 PM CT, and treasuries (ZB) run 7:20 AM to 1:00 PM CT.
What are the most volatile futures trading hours?
The most volatile futures trading hours are the first 90 minutes of RTH (8:30 AM to 10:00 AM CT) for equity index futures, the London/New York overlap window, and periods around major economic data releases like NFP, CPI, and FOMC announcements. The 7:30 AM CT pre-market data window also produces significant moves in ES and NQ.
When does the futures market close on Friday?
The futures market closes for the weekend on Friday at 4:00 PM Central Time. This applies to all CME Globex products. Trading does not resume until Sunday at 5:00 PM CT. Some prop firm traders exit positions earlier on Friday to avoid weekend gap risk, especially ahead of potential weekend news events.
How do CME holiday hours affect futures trading?
CME Group observes major U.S. holidays with either full closures or early closes. On early close days, futures typically halt between 12:00 PM and 1:15 PM CT depending on the product. Full closures include New Year's Day, Good Friday, and Christmas. CME publishes the annual holiday schedule on their website. Prop firm accounts follow the same holiday calendar.
What is the difference between Globex hours and pit trading hours?
Globex is the electronic trading platform that runs nearly 24 hours a day, five days a week. Pit trading (open outcry) has been largely discontinued for most futures products. The RTH hours referenced in modern futures trading refer to the electronic session window that overlaps with what used to be pit hours. All prop firm accounts trade on Globex.
Can you place futures orders outside of market hours?
Futures orders cannot be placed or executed during the daily maintenance break from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM CT or on weekends. During the regular Globex session (Sunday 5 PM to Friday 4 PM CT), orders can be placed at any time. Some trading platforms allow you to queue orders during maintenance for execution at the 5:00 PM reopen, but not all platforms support this feature.
