Apex vs TakeProfitTrader (TPT): Which Futures Prop Firm Wins in 2025?
If you trade futures in the prop firm world long enough, two names will always show up in the same conversation: Apex Trader Funding and TakeProfitTrader (TPT). Both promise fast funding, aggressive pricing, and a clean path to payouts — but they could not be more different once you get inside.
I’ve traded with both. Passed evaluations, run funded accounts, tested risk rules, and taken payouts (and yes, had payouts denied at Apex). This isn’t a hype piece. It’s a sober look at what you actually get with each firm — where they shine, where they break, and which one deserves a spot in your rotation.
Before diving into details, here’s the comparison table:
What Makes Apex and TPT So Different?
Apex and TPT often get grouped together because they target the same trader segment: futures-only, SIM-funded prop trading with a relatively low barrier to entry.
But the reality?
Apex is built for cheap, high-volume evaluations and heavy promo traffic.
TPT is built for clean, fast payouts with fewer gotchas.
They serve completely different needs — and if you don’t understand the differences, you’ll get blindsided by the rules (especially Apex’s trailing drawdown and payout enforcement).
Let’s break down the key areas that matter in real trading.
Evaluation Difficulty: Which Is Easier to Pass?
Apex Evaluation (FULL Account)
Apex evaluations are cheap — aggressively cheap — and the one-step format makes it feel straightforward.
What trips traders up?
- Trailing drawdown follows unrealized profit
- Unclear enforcement on trading behavior
- No buffer when equity spikes intraday
Even if you do everything right, one fast spike and fade can wipe you out. Many traders underestimate how punishing moving drawdowns are.
TPT Test Evaluation
TPT uses a simple, realistic evaluation:
- End-of-day trailing drawdown (not intraday)
- 5 minimum trading days
- 50% consistency requirement (no one-day hero pass)
- Pass once → you’re funded
It isn’t “easy,” but it’s predictable — and that matters. No trick rules. No invisible enforcement.
Verdict
If you want the cheapest entry, Apex wins.
If you want the cleanest and most consistent pass criteria, TPT wins.
Drawdown Rules: The Biggest Difference of All
No area creates more blown accounts — or payout denials — than drawdown logic.
Apex: Trailing DD (Unrealized)
Apex uses a true trailing threshold, following unrealized equity:
- Go up $1,200 intraday
- Trailing DD moves up $1,200
- Market snaps back while you’re still in the trade
- Account gone
This is why Apex feels like it has an invisible daily loss limit. It punishes holding runners and discourages scaling into winners.
TPT: EOD → Intraday, Depending on Tier
- Test: End-of-day trailing (much safer)
- PRO: Intraday trailing (strict but clear)
- PRO+: Live feed execution, no daily loss limit
TPT doesn’t play games with drawdown rules. They don’t follow unrealized PnL and then liquidate you mid-trade because of a tick reversal.
Verdict
If you struggle with trailing logic or float open profit, TPT is significantly safer.
Payout Systems: The Part Everyone Actually Cares About
Apex Payout Reality
Apex advertises:
- Weekly payouts
- 100% first $25K
- 80–90% after
But the ground truth is mixed:
- Denials happen frequently
- Reasons are vague (“erratic behavior”)
- Retroactive rule changes happen
- Support is slow when payouts are under review
I’ve been paid, and I’ve been denied. The inconsistency is the real issue.
TPT Payout Reality
TPT is the opposite:
- Payouts from day one (PRO & PRO+)
- Daily payout requests allowed
- Actual payout speed: same-day or next-day
- Zero payout drama in my experience
- Clear rules, clear enforcement
The big difference:
TPT does not weaponize vague terms to deny payouts.
Verdict
It’s not close.
TPT wins payout reliability by a mile.
Platforms & Execution: Who Handles Volatility Better?
Apex Platforms
- Rithmic
- Tradovate
- NinjaTrader
- Sierra
- TradingView
In practice, Apex execution is inconsistent:
- Disconnects during volatility
- Ghost orders
- Frozen DOM
- Slippage spikes
- “Order not found” issues
If you trade the open, this matters.
TPT Platforms
- NinjaTrader
- Tradovate
- TradingView
- R|Trader
- Quantower
- MotiveWave
(and more)
Execution on TPT — especially PRO+ — is stable and clean. Far fewer platform issues.
Verdict
TPT easily wins execution stability.
Scaling & Long-Term Growth
Apex
You can run:
- Up to 20 funded accounts
- But with trailing DD and payout issues… scaling becomes fragile
You’re constantly one volatility spike away from a breach.
TPT
You can scale to:
- PRO
- PRO+
- Live feed execution
- Higher reliability, fewer resets, clean buffer rules
Scaling actually feels sustainable.
Verdict
If your goal is long-term income or a funded career, TPT wins.
Community Trust & Reputation
Apex
Strong marketing, heavy influencer push, and huge promo culture.
But community feedback is mixed:
- Payout denials
- Rule confusion
- Support inconsistencies
- Technical glitches
TPT
Smaller, tighter, and more trader-first:
- CEO is public
- BBB-accredited
- Consistent payout proof
- Transparent rule set
- Fewer gimmicks
TPT isn’t trying to be flashy — they focus on smooth operations.
Verdict
TPT has a much cleaner reputation among serious futures traders.
Which Firm Should You Use?
Choose Apex If:
- You want super-cheap evaluations
- You’re okay with trailing DD following unrealized PnL
- You’re trading small size and want volume
- You understand the payout risk and accept it
Choose TPT If:
- You want real payouts without playing games
- You want stable execution
- You want daily payout access
- You want rules that don’t shift under you
- You want consistent risk parameters
My Personal Take
Apex is a tool, not a home.
TPT is a funding partner you can actually scale with.
If you’re building a prop trading rotation, I’d run:
- TPT PRO+ as a primary
- Apex FULL as a cheap side stack
- TopOneFutures Instant Funding for fast liquidity
- Lucid Trading as the high-trust anchor
Apex still has utility — but it shouldn’t be your main income source.
